Like we’ve already learned this in our previous lessons, once an idea has been accepted by the subconscious mind, it remains there until it is replaced by another idea.
The unconscious mind exists to help you survive your environment. If you had to think about what to do every time you encountered a door, a smile or need to breathe or pump your heart, you would be unable to function. The subconscious mind learns one response to a situation and after it works OK a few times, it stops thinking about any other possible responses. In other words, the mind uses the Law of Persistence too!
Like the Law of Determination, Persistence states that your ability to endure through setbacks and adversity is a measure of the belief you have in yourself and in your ability to succeed. The higher your level of persistence in the face of great odds, the greater your level of belief and certainty in what you’re doing.
Furthermore, the Law of Persistence states that the longer you keep chipping away, the higher your odds of achieving your desired outcome. In other words, every time you say “no” to defeat and choose to go at it again you are one step closer to success.
Persistence is always a requisite for progress. Everybody wants success, but on a practical level, it almost always takes time, focus, and effort to succeed. It often takes far greater time, focus, and effort than initially thought.
As with the law of determination, if you quit, it’s impossible to win. If you never quit and continue to persist despite challenges, you are sure to succeed. It will be just a matter of time before you reap the rewards.
Persistence is what separates winners from losers. Where would the world be without individuals like Thomas Edison, Nelson Mandela and many others? If you understand the Laws of Success, you’ll know that if you have an idea, create a plan, take action and totally believe that you will achieve your goal, you will get there, and so you should keep going.
Just like a gardener plants a carrot seed in the right environment, gives it the right nutrients, leaves it the right amount of time; knows beyond any doubt that a carrot, that nourishes and gives life will soon arrive on their plate. That’s just how the laws of nature work.
Napoleon Hill, author of “Think and Grow Rich” said: “In every adversity there are seeds of opportunity”. Every time plans don’t go quite right, winners persist. There’s always some positive to be gained from every negative… but you have to look for it.
Imagine a soccer player who scores an own goal in front of 80,000 supporters. What would the chances of his team’s success be if he packed up and left the pitch? Failure is debilitating, but the Law of Persistence encourages us to swiftly re-energise, restart and refocus on the ever-present opportunities in the midst of adversity.
Entrepreneurs who succeed are the ones who have confidence in themselves and their enterprises and persevere despite all the challenges, difficult situations and problems that come up. They exercise patience and don’t lose heart when they make mistakes or seem to be failing. You have to persist…it is a Law!
When you become despondent, you begin to doubt your own abilities. Your mind, being unable to distinguish between real and imagined (Law of Visualization), believes your doubts and does it’s best to give you more of what you have started to believe about yourself. You begin to believe that perhaps you are destined to fail, have bad luck or you start seeing yourself as a victim – and of course these beliefs get reinforced into your psyche and become self-fulfilling prophecies.
So, what can you do to reap from the Law of Persistence?
- Cultivate A Never-Give-Up Attitude
Talent without perseverance never comes to full fruition. Opportunities without persistence will be lost. There is a direct correlation between perseverance and potential. If you have a habit of giving up, you need to overcome it to be successful.
- Ditch the Wrong Belief That Life Should Be Easy
Having the right expectations going into anything is half the battle won. It’s easier to expect that life should be handed to us on a silver platter. However, expectations don’t always match reality. When faced with tough situations, you have two choices. You can either give up, or you can dig in and get down in the trenches.
- Replace the Belief That Success Is A Destination
Success is not a destination. It’s a path you choose to walk down each day. When you stop seizing opportunities, you hit plateaus. As a leader, you’ll constantly have the chance to learn, grow and move forward. With a bit of perseverance, you can move beyond your “success” and through open doors.
- Develop Resilience
You can’t allow discouraging moments break you. Instead, you must be resilient. By persevering through tough times and taking struggles in your stride, you have the ability to go beyond your talent. Endeavour to bounce back, no matter how defeated you may feel.
- Check Your Vision
People who persist have a larger vision in mind as they work at their craft or profession. Visualize in your mind’s eye what you want to create or do, and keep working toward it no matter what comes your way.
What is your vision? Let that be your guiding light as you persevere through the less than desirable moments of life. Know that through perseverance, your talent will be lifted, ultimately reaping great benefits in the end.
